The saying “beauty is pain” doesn’t have to be true, especially if your Injector is a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologist (CRNA). As a practicing CRNA, it is my job and passion to use my skills and knowledge to safely prevent patients from experiencing the pain and stress associated with surgery. There are many ways to accomplish this and I am happy to offer a variety of anesthetic modalities in my aesthetic practice as well.

TOPICAL ANESTHESIA: BLT CREAM

Benzocaine, Lidocaine, and Tetracaine (BLT) is a combination of local anesthetics used for topical anesthesia and mild pain control.

The onset of numbing is from 10-15 minutes and lasts 30-60 minutes making it ideal for any Medical Microneedling procedure or Botox.

INFILTRATION ANESTHESIA

A commonly used method of anesthetizing the skin, it involves injecting the local anesthetic agent into the tissue to be incised. Anesthesia is almost immediate when injected into the intradermal tissue.

FIELD OR RING BLOCK

A field or ring block is a type of infiltration anesthesia. The local anesthetic is placed around the procedure site, anesthetizing the nerve fibers exiting the area. A ring block is useful when a large area, such as the scalp, needs to be anesthetized prior to PRP treatments.

PERIPHERAL NERVE BLOCK

A peripheral nerve block involves placing the local anesthetic into a precise location at or around the main nerve trunk that will effectively obtund sensation in the area of that particular nerve’s sensory distribution. Common peripheral nerve blocks used in aesthetics include the supraorbital nerve block for procedures on the scalp and lateral forehead supratrochlear nerve and supraorbital nerve blocks for procedures on the upper eyelid, acanthus, medial nasal skin, conjunctiva, and lateral lacrimal ducts; and most commonly the infraorbital nerve block for upper lip and nasolabial fold injection of fillers.

VIBRATION ANESTHESIA

Vibration anesthesia has been used for many years to reduce pain and we use it every day at Minnie Street Aesthetics. The success of this non medicinal method of pain relief lies in the ‘gate theory of pain control.’ As described by Melzack and Wall in the 1960s, painful nerve impulses caused by injuries are mediated by nerve cells within the spinal cord that act as gates, preventing or facilitating their passage to the brain where they are realized. Without vibration anesthesia, those painful impulses are carried through small C fibers uninhibited through a ‘gate’ in the spinal cord that results in the brain sensing a painful stimulus. When applied simultaneously to a painful procedure, the vibratory stimulation excites large A fibers that activate inhibitory interneurons, or close the gate, thereby mitigating the perception of pain in the brain.

COOLING

Cool ice packs can be applied to the treatment area to reduce the discomfort of many procedures. Both pain and temperature sensations travel along the same nerve pathways. When the nerve pathway is overloaded by the cold sensation, pain is less likely to be felt in the same area.

EQUIMOLAR MIXTURE OF OXYGEN AND NITROUS OXIDE (EMONO)

EMONO is a blend of 50% oxygen and 50% nitrous oxide that has an analgesic effect by reducing the perception of painful stimuli. This combination of inhaled medical gases is a safe and effective means of managing pain and anxiety in any of our treatments.
